RIBA National Award for Culture building HOME
June 27th, 2016
HOME Culture Building in Manchester was awarded a National Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The complex designed by Mecanoo architects is among the 46 winners for this annual prize. The building is also a contender for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize.
Behind the simple-looking design lies a complex world of interlocking and overlapping spaces and functions. The architect dealt with the (technical) challenges of this busy location in an excellent manner and the building gives more to the public domain than its neighbours, according to the jury.
Besides two theatres with 450 and 150 seats, there are five cinemas, a café and lobby, an art gallery, studio and teaching spaces and a space for outdoor performances. The project brings together two existing cultural institutions, the renowned Manchester Library Theatre Company and art house cinema Cornerhouse. The centre will also accommodate large cultural festivals and international events including the Manchester International Festival.
Theateradvies, as the theatre consultant, was involved in the design of the theatre and cinema halls.
